Caroline MALLETT
1847 - 1933 (85 years)-
Name Caroline MALLETT Birth 13 May 1847 Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada Gender Female Census 1851 Lot 28, Concession 3, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada - Only census information available, nothing about the property. This is the first census in which all names of individuals within the household were listed. Eliza was enumerated twice, once at home, and once as a servant in the 2 story brick house of Dugald McLachlan. The family lives in a 1 story frame house. All the children are listed as single. The first four are shown as born in England, all of the rest in Canada. None of the children are listed as attending school.
Their ages: James - 53, Elizabeth - 46, Frederick - 24, James - 22, Eliza - 21, Ann - 19, Henrietta - 17, Elizabeth - 15, William - 13, Henry - 10, Caroline - 5.
Census 1861 Lot 28, Concession 3, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada - Only Ann, William, Henry and Caroline remain at home. Henrietta and Elizabeth have gone 3 farms or so down the road and married the brothers Smith, William and Thomas. Frederick and James have gone to West Williams Twp and are listed in the census there. Both are married and have children. Frederick dies sometime before the 1871 census. Eliza has married Thomas Paddock and is likely living in Puslinch Twp. Henry and Carrie are attending school. All the children are said to be born in Canada, (contradicts 1851 for Ann), none are said to be married.
Their ages (next birthday):
James - 62, Elizabeth - 56, Ann - 27, William - 21, Henry - 18, Caroline - 14.
Note - I don't know where or when she met Edward Thrupp but she is married to him and they live on the first concession of Yarmouth Township, which is right along Lake Erie, in the 1871 census, East Elgin, Yarmouth Twp, p 76 line 17. The daughter Edith is not mentioned in the census. The property is described as 85 acres with 3 town or village building lots. Under lot are the numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, could be interpreted many different ways. They have 3 horses, 4 colts, 3 cows, 4 cattle, 11 swine. The property is perhaps very close to Port Stanley. Edith is born in 1871 or 72, and Edward dies around the same time. She is a widow until she marries John Price, I think a period of some 10 years, because the first child from the second marriage doesn't come along until 1881. James may have gone to live with Carrie after Edward's death. This would make sense for 3 reasons: James' wife was dead, William Henry was starting a family of his own on the home place, and Carrie would need some help. This could explain the photograph, supposedly of James, taken in St. Thomas, although the man in the picture looks younger than the 72 plus years James would be at the time.
Their ages in 1871: Edward 28, Caroline 24.
Mar 11 1872
Edward Thrupp dies. "A.B. Cantab" follows his name. He is the son of the reverend Edward Thrupp. He is buried at Christ Church in Port Stanley.
Jan 14, 1880
John Price is a bachelor, 34, Caroline Thrupp is a widow, 30, when they marry.
1881
Carrie is married to John Price, they have a daughter Marion E who is 2 months old, born in Feb (?). They live in Port Stanley village, he is described as a merchant, of Irish descent, Church of England. The very next line in the census describes Samuel Price (72) and Alma (68). His occupation is "Gentleman", which probably means retired in this context. Probably John's father, perhaps right next door.
Mar 5 1923
John Price, Gentleman, dies of "acute dilation of the heart." Buried Mar 8 1923 at Christ Church.
