    • Gilbert qualified as a medical doctor but in the end practised dentistry, because, according to his son 'there was no night work to interfere with his rest'. This was immediately before the introduction of national certification for dentists. He practised in Newbury, Berkshire for many years until his retirement in 1924, when he left England to join his daughter Wyn in Sark, in the Channel Islands.
