Abt 1768 - Abt 1840 (~ 72 years)-
Name George EVANS [1] Birth Abt 1768 Hatfield, Hertfordshire, England - Burial record suggests age at death as 72
Christening 12 Sep 1770 Gender Male Occupation Est 1798 - Gamekeeper at Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire.
George was Gamekeeper to James Cecil, First Marquess of Salisbury at Hatfield House. He held a Gamekeeper's Licence between 1792 and 1798 and again between 1799 till 1804. Licence entries found in Hertfordshire County Records 1699-1850, Hertfordshire Library.
James Cecil was the 7th Earl and 1st Marquess (Lord Salisbury) and was primarily a politician, becoming Lord Chamberlain in 1789 and he was created Knight of the Garter in 1793. He held these posts under the then prime minister, William Pitt, the Younger. After a period of decline by the end of the 18th century the Cecils were once again a powerful political family, largely through the strong personalities of the Cecils' wives. James's wife, the Marchioness, was Lady Emily Mary Hill, the daughter of the Irish Earl of Downshire. Lady Emily scandalised polite society with her partying and fun loving behaviour. She also loved hunting and must therfore have been in regular contact with George.
There was a visit to Hatfield House in 1800 by George lll and his Queen, when George must have been present.
After 1804 the family's fortunes seemed to have declined: a George Evans was admitted to the Hatfield Union Workhouse 18 April 1836, where he died on 31 January 1840, a few days before his burial on 4th February. This George is described in the workhouse records as a watchmaker, an unlikely change from his earlier calling of gamekeeper.
