-
Name John MALLETT Birth 25 Dec 1787 Frithelstock, Devon, England Gender Male Census 1851 Marine Villa, Instow, Barnstaple, Devon, England [1]
- John was a "Retired Watch Maker". Henrietta and Susan have no occupations listed, and are both unmarried.
Note - I have included only the names found in Walter Mallett's letters as children, without birthdates, and made Susanna Upjohn his only wife, although the wording in the blurb below seems to indicate that he was a widower when he married Susanna.
Excerpt form a book about clock and watchmakers, p 260:
MALLETT, JOHN: Barnstaple. Watch and Clockmaker and silversmith, 4 High St.; business established in 1811. Described as widower, of Barnstaple, when he married Susanna Mary Upjohn at Ealing, Middlesex, 1818; she was the sister of William John Upjohn, watch manufacturer, of 11 St. John's Square, Clerkenwell. Mallett supplied a new clock (replaced 1913) for Barnstaple parish church in 1820. In the same year his apprentice Joseph Webb ran away (EFP, 27 July 1820). His wife died, aged 46 on 1 July 1835 (EFP); and he retired with his two daughters to Marine Cottage Instow. Mahogany 8-day longcase timepiece with circular white-painted dial; other longcase clocks reported, also watches (see Chapter 5).
MALLETT, JOHN (ii) Barnstaple. Son of the above; in 1848 returned from London after working in the watch trade, married, and succeeded his father in the business, establishing himself also as a watch manufacturer. William Horton Ellis was apprenticed to him in 1848, premium £150. Some time after 1856 the business at 4 High Street was succeeded by that of Short & Bailey. The Mallett family later became prominent as antique dealers, first at Bath and then in London.
In the 1851 census John is described as a "Retired Watch Maker", and is living with Henrietta and Susan at "Marine Villa", Instow, Barnstaple.
