  The family was outside of the UK from at least 1822 to 1831, because all of the children born during this time period were born in Canada. According to the 1841 census, all of the children were born in "Foreign Parts", the first one being born in 1822, 8 years after Charles and Elizabeth were married. Subsequent censuses are more specific, right down to "Kingston, Upper Canada" (modern day Ontario, Canada). No record of any children being born in the first 8 years of their marriage has been found. The oldest son William is the only one of the 4 children confirmed to have been born in Kingston. His baptism was recorded in the Register of the Parish of St George, Kingston. The father Charles may have been in Kingston before his wife Elizabeth was able to follow him there, and that may account for the lack of children in the first 8 years of their marriage. He was a Blacksmith working in the Royal Navy Dockyards of Devonport, and may have been posted to Kingston to work in the Navy Dockyards there during and after the war of 1812. Kingston had only come into existence a few years before the war, in 1783, after an influx of Loyalists from the United States at the end of the war of American Independence. As tensions began to mount between the British and Americans prior to 1812, the British began to develop a Naval Base in Kingston to counter a base on the American side of Lake Ontario at Sackets Harbor. But because the population of Kingston was so small, it was difficult to find the necessary skilled workmen (such as Blacksmiths) to operate the dockyard, so they had to be imported. This is undoubtedly how Charles, and eventually Elizabeth, came to be in Kingston. After the war, as tensions between the US and the British began to ease, the need for the naval base diminished, and it was closed completely in 1834. That may be when the family returned to England, 3 years after the birth of their last child. We know they were back in England at least by 1838, when Charles died. Charles may also have had a role in the construction of the Rideau Canal which connects Kingston to Ottawa. Work was begun in 1826 and completed in 1832. If so, he may have contracted a disease or some sort of injury that hastened his death at age 45. Many canal workers died of Malaria and other causes.

  	Elizabeth was a widow, born in County (Devon). All of the children were born in "Foreign Parts". She appears to have been living in the house of James Burton, who was in the "Army".

  	There were no children listed, but they had only been married the year before. John's brother Henry was living with them, as were Caroline Coplin (age 33) and George Henry Coplin (age 1), probably Caroline's son. They were listed as visitors.
