    • The maiden name of the mother of all of the children in this family from Bessie to Joseph was Wilton, according to the Civil Indexes, but no record of John Mallett marrying Jane Wilton has been found. John's first wife was Ann Rogers, and that marriage occurred in 1859. In the 1861 census John and Ann had one child, Sampson, born in 1860. Ann died in 1864, and in 1871 John had a new wife called Jane, and a son called Thomas who was born in 1857, 2 years before his marriage to Ann Rogers. Thomas was not with John and Ann in 1861, and no record of a Thomas Mallett born in 1857 has been found in the Civil Indexes. There is, however, a Thomas Sleep born in 1857 whose mother's maiden name was Wilton. Then we find a Jane Wilton who married Richard Sleep in 1856, and Jane Sleep who married John Mallett in 1892. The 1892 marriage is rather late, but no other has been found. It looks as though John and Jane lived together without marrying until 1892 when they decided to make it official, just before John's death in 1893.
