'The people of Kessingland are proud of their church, with its illustrious past. Its glory has by no means departed, for fine examples are set by such men as Mr Alfred Mallett, who though well over 80 years of age, has been in the choir for more than seventy years, having joined when he was ten years old.'

3 CONT MR. ALFRED MALLETT
3 CONT A LOSS TO KESSINGLAND
3 CONT The death occurred on Wednesday of Mr. Alfred Mallett, A well-known and respected resident of Kessingland. During an extremely busy life, in and around Kessingland, Mr. Mallett had won the respect and esteem of a large number of business and social friends. In his business, as a master carpenter and undertaker, his undertakings were always carried out with a thoroughness and thought for others. Apart from his business transactions which brought him so many lifelong associations, Mr. Mallett found time to fill numerous parochial offices, many parishioners at one time or another seeking his advice and help.
3 CONT For 74 years Mr. Mallett had been a valued member of the St. Edmund's Church Choir, a record without equal in East Anglia, and probably throughout the country in church circles. For upwards of thirty years he served the church faithfully in his capacity as churcbwarden, the many rectors that have held the living at Kessingland finding him a reliable counsellor and friend. The older generation will recall to mind his activities in connection with the massive church alterations and repairs that were brought about during the incumbency of the Rev. J.C. Vaudney in the year 1908. At this time the bells were thoroughly restored while a new chancel was erected, as well as organ chamber and choir stalls. Mr. Mallett's wide experience of church matters contributed largely to the success of these undertakings. He remained a, faithful church worker quite to the end, and at the time of his death, at the ripe old age of 83 years, he filled the office of hon. churchwarden. It would, indeed, be difficult to find a parishioner more closely identified with parish work than Mr. Mallett. For several years he officiated as secretary for the local branch of Nottingham Oddfellows Friendly Society, an old institution in Kessingland. He was also the official rate-collector at Kessingland for over thirty years, relinquishing this office when the duties were transferred to Lowestoft Town Hall some four years ago. Mr. Mallett had also been a day school manager and Clerk to the Parish Council.
3 CONT Mr. Mallett had brought up a large family, a son, Alfred, being a successful owner of a coffee plantation in South Africa. Others are closely identified with their late father's business in the district. He will be much missed and, despite his great age, remained fairly active until a few days ago. His wife predeceased him in the early Spring of last year. The Photograph reproduced was taken when Mr. Mallett had completed 70 years as a chorister.
