- It is not certain that Hugh Mallett, Grocer, of Exeter is the same Hugh Mallett that married Mary Glanville, or the Hugh Mallett born in Iddesleigh in 1681, but the age fits, and Hugh the Grocer's wife's name was indeed Mary. One might expect also that the second son of a gentleman, as Hugh was, might be apprenticed to a tradesman so that he could earn a respectable living, since he would not inherit his father's estate, and Saint Peter Cathedral would be an appropriate venue for the marriage of a gentleman's son.
However, Hugh, when referring to his children in his will, mentions that their grandmother's name was Mary Talbott, so one might suppose that Hugh's wife was also Mary Talbott and not Mary Glanville - but Hugh or Mary's mother might have remarried, and Mary could have been born Talbott but married someone called Glanville before she married Hugh...
