Samuel MALLETT
1816 - 1881 (64 years)-
Name Samuel MALLETT [1, 2] Birth 21 Dec 1816 St Thomas, Exeter, Devon, England [3] Christening 6 Jan 1817 Castle Street Chapel, Exeter, Devon, England Gender Male Christening 6 Apr 1817 St Thomas the Apostle, Exeter, Devon, England Note - Samuel was born in St. Thomas or Exwick near Exeter on 21 December 1816 and was baptised twice in the following year, firstly at Castle Street Chapel in Exeter on 6 January 1817 and then at St Thomas parish church on 6 April 1817. This was because Samuel's parents were members of an Independent (Congregational) church, thus one of the Non-Conformist denominations. At that time, baptisms still had to be performed by the Established Church otherwise known as the Church of England, so Samuel was baptised a second time at his local parish church to meet the official requirements. Partly because of the rise of Non-Conformist denominations such as the Methodists and Baptists, the current system of Civil Registration was introduced in 1837. Samuel was the only child in his family known to have been baptised in this way, but his sister Betty and her husband later became members of the Methodist church.
Samuel later moved to Barnstaple, probably shortly after his father's death in 1827. It is not known why he went to North Devon, so far away from home, but his sister Mary was living in Barnstaple at that time with her husband and her first child was born there. He appeared to have begun his apprenticeship as a shipwright in Barnstaple even though the main focus of the shipbuilding industry was at nearby Bideford. It is not known which yard or employer he worked for. It is possible that his sister and her husband helped him to find a job there.
Interestingly, when Samuel was living in Barnstaple several members of another branch of the Mallett family (descendants of Henry Mallett of Shebbear) owned shops in the town, it is quite probable that they came into contact but may not have been aware of their common ancestry (about a century and a half before).
The Hampshire Telegraph reported Samuel's date of death as 10 December 1881 in Wingfield Street, but the official record at Portsmouth Record Office gives the date as the 27th November 1881.
