    • Sarah was born illegitimate to Elizabeth Jackman and no clues have been found to the identity of her father. An Elizabeth Jackman was publicy flogged for bastardy around that time, though illegitimate births were not uncommon. It has not been possible to establish whether this was the same Elizabeth or whether she had any other children.

      The Jackmans were a large family scattered around the Okehampton area interconnected with several other local families such as the Canns, Langs and Wonnacots, but by the late Victorian era most had moved elsewhere, particularly to south Devon around Brixham.
