    • John was called up for WW2 and served in the 23rd Hussars during WW2 a newly formed tank regiment. He had arrived in France on the 11th June 1944 at Courseuilles-sur-Mer, a port within Juno Beach in the Canadian sector.

The battle at Point 112 where he died was probably his first serious engagement with the enemy, near the village of Esquay south of Caen on 28th June 1944. The Sherman tank he was in took a direct hit from the enemy in a particularly hard fought battle. Point 112 was an especially strategic position that the Germans did not want to lose and it was not until the second battle in September that it was won by the Allies. He is interred in the British War Cemetery at Banneville La Campagne, not very far from where he met his end. His age is given as 34 at time of death in the official record, suggesting a birth year of 1910, but no birth certificate has ever been found.
