| Note |
- Richard we think came to New Zealand having enlisted in the Australian army to take part in the Aikato/ Maori wars in 1864. We have no record of the whereabouts of Richard or Martha after Melbourne nor where they are buried despite much research.
Grey River mouth on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand. It was very prominent during the gold rush years about the time Richard and Samuel with families settled there. All the family records I have except Richard and wife Martha Katherine Freeman as to where they were and later buried. Richard enlisted in the Australian armed forces that came over to New Zealand during the Waikato Maori wars 1864, he was honourably discharged after the conflict with grants of farm land and a block of residential land at Cambridge near the city of Hamilton in the center of the North Island. What happened to this is still a mystery to this day.
Possible daughter:
My Great Grandmother Emma O'Donovan-Iland was married 2nd Jun 1868 in Whitechapel, London.
Her maiden name was shown on her Marriage Certificate as Emma Simmons.
Her fathers name was shown on the same Certificate as Richard Mallett.
The Residence at the time of the marriage for Emma was 17 Leopold Street, Vauxhall, London.
Richard's occupation was entered as Seedsman and Florist.
Another interesting link is the fact that we have passed down from several generations back (probably Emma Simmons) an old Maori walking stick, to which no one has any idea why or how it came to be in the family. The comment on the Maori Wars seemed to provide perhaps another link.
