Name Nicholas MALLETT [1] Birth Est 1582 [1] Gender Male EA Group I
Miscellaneous25 Feb 1612 [1] Note - NICHOLAS MALLET, Glover, was admitted as a Freeman of Norwich in 1612 but had not been apprenticed; therefore he must have been already established in the City. He was appointed Headman of the Glovers in 1630. He named his first son William, his second son Edmund and his third son Robert before naming a son after himself. A record of his birth has not so far been found but as the custom was to name the first son after the son's grandfather it would be reasonable to assume that William, the son of Edward, baptised 25th Dec. 1562 in the parish of St. James was Nicholas's father. Robert, after whom his third son was named may have been also related, possibly a brother.
ROBERT MALLET was a weaver in the parish of St. Peter Parmentergate about this time and ROBERT MALLET, his son, left provision in his will for a charity in St. Peter Parmentergate in 1696.
Enrolled deeds give details of the following acquired by Nicholas:
1613 property in the parish of St.Peter Parmentergate
1615 property in Pigg Lane (deeds of St.Georges Tombland)
1618 property in the parish of All Saints
1622 property in the parish of St. Giles
WILLIAM MALLET, Glover, was the oldest surviving son of Nicholas. He died at the early age of 48 but had made a will in which he left property in St. Peter Parmentergate (presumably the above) to his wife for her life and then to their children.
The sons of William Mallet, Glover, were:
1) NICHOLAS MALLET, Glover, who inherited property in the parish of St. Andrews from his grandfather Nicholas (Enrolled Deeds). After his marriage he made this property over to his mother, Mary, while he apparently used the St. Giles property.
3 CONT 2) WILLIAM MALLET, Glover, though he seems to have used the St.Andrews property, was described as 'of Catton'. In 1703, after the death of his mother, William bought out his brother's and sister's share of the property in St.Peter Parmentergate being referred to in the deed as 'Glover, of Catton'.
3) HENRY MALLET, became a weaver and seems to have worked from the St. Peter Parmentergate property. Did he perhaps learn the trade from his uncle Robert? In 1698 Henry acquired his own yard in the parish of St. Margarets.
The records are incomplete with the next generation and it is only possible to assess the evidence and suggest the most likely parentage for Nicholas who married Susanna Salmon in 1747. In 1738 the minutes of the Guardians of the Poor show that NICHOLAS was apprenticed to Jeremiah King, a Worsteda Weaver. He would, therefore be at least 10 years old, and probably his father and possibly his mother had died. In the Parish Registers of St. Giles the burial of William Mallett, aged 23, is recorded. He is not described as either married or unmarried. This may be because his wife had died, perhaps at Nicholas's birth.
