    Note
    • NICHOLAS MALLET, Blacksmith, often referred to as 'Nicholas the younger' was not apprenticed, but his mother's maiden name was Wisbie, and it is perhaps worth noting that in 1578 Gregorius Wisbey was admitted as a Freeman Blacksmith, and no other Freemen of that name are listed. Nicholas may have gone into his Grandfather's business. He named one of his sons Joseph and the two names Nicholas and Joseph are associated in a Marret family in Holt at the beginning of the 17th century, and a later generation Joseph would seem to have moved down to Norwich, the name becoming Mallet(t). This suggests a possible connection between the Holt branch and the Norwich branch. The Marret spelling appears more than once in the M allet(t) family as do many other variations.

As well as apparently inheriting the All Saints property from his father, the Glover, Nicholas the Blacksmith and his son, who could only have been a child, leased property in St. John Timberhill ('sometime parcel of Segores Inn tenement') in 1664 which was held in the family until 1714 (Deeds of St. John Timberhill).

JOHN, the son of Nicholas, was married apparently at All Saints church in 1686 but after the second marriage of Nicholas most of the events - births, marriages and burials - were registered at St. Augustines, and it was in this parish that Nicholas the younger acquired property which he held from about 1711 until his death in 1716 (Land and Window Tax records).

In his will made in 1715 Nicholas the younger, Blacksmith and Farrier, made a bequest of five pounds to his son Nicholas who was therefore alive at that time but no trace of him has been found in Norwich after his marriage and the birth of his daughter and the apparent burial of either this dughter or his wife in 1713. No mention is made in the will of the business, any property being bequeathed to the other son John and his wife and to Peter Shoulder and his wife Sara, Nicholas's daughter. But on 29th December, 1727, a Nicholas Mallet married Mary Shepherd in Bessingham in the north of the county, so perhaps the son Nicholas went to the district of his family's relatives after the death of his wife and child.

JOHN MALLET, Cordwainer, is listed in the parish of St. Faiths in the 1714 Poll and that he was married is evident from his father's will, but pending further research it is not possible to establish any male line descent in this branch for certain.
