Note - Her husband's occupation is Clerk. Her age is listed as 20 at the time of the census, 21 at the time of her marriage which occurred in Dec. So she was born in 1860. He is a bachelor and she was a spinster. Easter Ann Lake of Ethel and brother William witnessed. According to the marriage certificate she is C of E, he Methodist. In the census she is listed as Prebyterian.
I checked the birth indexes at least up to 1895 and did not find any children. I found Adam Conboy, son of Adam, son of Adam, in Erin Twp. This is the younger brother of James. There is only one birth though, and Adam is not in Erin in the 1891 census, so it seems they went somewhere else too. Perhaps death indexes will turn up something.
In the cemetary index for Erin Union cemetary I found Adam (the elder) Conboy and his wife, plus James, and the wife of Thomas, but not Mary Jane, and not Thomas. They are in row 16 #3. In row 16 #4 is "Leyton V., son of James and Mary Conboy, died Nov 12 1894 aged 7 years, 1 mo, 8 days. The names are right, and the location in the cemetary is right. There is a listing in the on-line index for Erin Union cemetery for a Mary Conboy, that could be her. I checked the birth indexes for Conboy babies but only from 1881 onwards. I'm not sure if I ever looked for them in the death indexes, I could confirm I've got the right James, and maybe find Mary Jane too. The age at time of death (60) fits with the information I already had about date of birth. At 16 #5 is William Conboy, 1843 - 1927, no idea what connection there is there. I should check the 1901 census for Erin. Maybe they went somewhere and came back.
In the 1901 census the farm is no longer owned by any Conboy. Adam, Annie and Elizabeth B have moved into Erin Village. There is no sign of James and Mary Jane. William Conboy and his wife live in Erin village too.
I found the death records of James and Leyton V. James is listed as a jeweller, and Leyton is listed as a jeweller's son. James died in Toronto in 1916, Leyton in Acton in 1894. I don't find the family in the 1891 or 1901 census for Acton, nor the 1901 census for Toronto. There is only one James Conboy in the Toronto city directory for the period. He is a market gardener, and I found him in the 1901 census, and confirmed he is not my guy, so I still don't know where they lived. Leyton was born in Erin according to the death record, but I did not find a birth record.
I have found the Conboys in the 1891 census in Brandon, Manitoba. William Henry Mallett is there too. The 1890 City Directory for Brandon lists "Conboy & Co., Jewellers, Rosser Ave. near 9th". The family lives above the store. William Henry is listed in the same directory as a "Jeweller, Rosser", so he was working with his brother in law. There is only one child, Leyton, 3 years old and born in Manitoba, so they must have gone out there before that. James is 36, occupation Jeweller, Mary J is 30. This is the only point in time that I can place the family together, I don't know where they were in 1901, but somewhere in Ontario seems the best bet, since Leyton died in 1894 in Acton. They might have been staying with the Matthews in 1894, or they may have been with the Conboys in Erin, and the boy died in Acton because that's where the hospital was. It's possible there are more children, too, because Leyton was only 3 in 1891, and Mary Jane was only 30. I might try the Toronto directory again to see if I can place them there in 1901. I should also look again in 1901 in Brandon. Given the propensity for long life among the Malletts, especially the women, it's likely Mary Jane lived past the cutoff date for the death indexes in Ontario (1924), and that's why I haven't found her there. She would have been a mere 64 in 1924.
