      ----------
      from Jane Beadman -

Arthur's second wife Gladys doesn't know anything about the Malletts except that Gertrude was rather a dragon. Arthur, who was a very gentle person, seems to have had a 'difficult' relationship with Gertrude and was slightly psychologically damaged as a result. He had claustrophobia which worsened in later life. Perhaps Gertrude was badly affected by death of son Ralph. He died in childhood in tragic circumstances, 'something to do with water'.

We have a few letters from Gertrude to Arthur. No mention of Mallett relatives which suggests that the only one Gertie was in touch with was Margaret who lived nearby. There is mention of a few of George's siblings so they didn't cut themselves off completely from family contact. There are no photos amongs Arthur's papers of George or Gertrude which seems odd; presumably they didn't see much of each other once Arthur moved to Oxford. Interesting that neither George nor Gertrude were witnesses at Arthur's marriage to Aileen - both witnesses were Aileen's family (brother and sister I think). One wonders why they didn't make the journey to Belfast (which wouldn't have been difficult from Morecambe)
