    • Bertie was described in the 1881 census as the grandson of William Mallett and was 4 months old at the time (April 1881). His birth appears to have been registered in the first quarter of 1881, as "Bertie Mallett". In the 1891 and 1901 censuses Bertram is described as the son of William, not the grandson.

      It seems most likely that he was the son of Annie and not of William, (and indeed this has been confirmed by a family member) because the 1881 census says he was a grandson, he was 15 years younger than Archibald who was otherwise the youngest child, and it was not uncommon to take illegitimate grandchildren into the home and raise them as children thereafter.
