    • Sydney's parents have not been identified. He first appears associated with this family in the 1901 census in the household of John and Ann Mallett of Sticklepath, age 11 months, described as the "nephew" of John Mallett. In the 1911 census he was living in the household of Ann Mallett (John was dead), age 10, but now described as "grandchild". Sydney was still single and living with his grandmother Ann in Sticklepath in 1939.

A second child, Lily Mallett, about 2 years older than Sydney appears in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses along with him, first descibed as "niece", and then as "grandchild". They are assumed to have been brother and sister, but they could have been cousins. They are also assumed to be the illegitimate offspring of one of John and Ann's daughters because of the change in relationship from "niece/nephew" to grandchild", and because they were with their grandparents for 2 successive censuses.

Elizabeth has been chosen as the mother of Lily and Sydney because she was about the right age, and she lived further away from home (Torquay) — not uncommon for unwed mothers. But they could easily have been the children of either of her two sisters Emily or Mabel, who were both single and working as domestic servants in 1901.
