    • In 1880 [1780?] a John Mallet was named as the father of Mary Adams' unborn child (of Ilketshall St Lawrence near to Bungay). His father in law (step father in those days) stepped in to pay the money. We feel pretty cerain that this is Walter's father. [He'd be only 11 when the base born child appeared!]
      . . . THIS JOHN MALLETT WAS FOUND BY A RESEARCHER WHO MY COUSIN HAD EMPLOYED. HE WOULD 'FIT' QUITE NICELY AS WALTER MALLETT'S FATHER. IF YOU REMEMBER, WE DON'T KNOW WHERE HE CAME FROM. ACCORDING TO THE 1851 CENSUS RETURNS HE SAID HE WAS FROM BUNGAY. UNFORTUNATELY THERE IS NOTHING IN ANY OF THE PARISH RECORDS TO SHOW THIS. THE MARY ADAMS BIT CAME FROM THE POORHOUSE RECORDS. SHE SAID THAT THIS JOHN MALLETT WAS THE FATHER. SHE CAME FROM ILKETSHALL ST LAWRENCE. ACCORDING TO THE RECORDS JOHN MALLETT WAS THE SON OF MARGARET GODBOLD (WIDOW MALLETT) AND JOHN MALLETT'S 'FATHER IN LAW' WHICH APPARENTLY MEANT 'STEPFATHER' (ROGER GODBOLD) IN THOSE DAYS CAME TO THE RESCUE AND PAID THE MONEY. . . . We cannot find the death of Robert Mallett her husband."--Tina Feb 2001
      John and Sarah had a son Robert along with several other children at Blundeston in Suffolk. They seem to have moved to Ilketshall St Andrew some time after 1813 and three of the children were married here. John -who moved back to Ashby (next to Blundeston), Robert who married Lydia and Sarah who married William Payne. Their sister Mary was married in Hopton to Robert Thrower and then moved to Ellingham (just down the road from Ilk St Andrew).
