  • Notes  Married:
    • It is not known precisely where or when William met Jennie, but it is likely that it was in Deloraine, Manitoba, about 1889. Both William and Jennie were born in Ontario, but their marriage is not registered there. In 1878 William was apparently living in Plattsville, Ontario, Canada (1878 letter to Myrtie Mallett from Henrietta A. Smith in New Hamburg), but in 1881 he was with his mother and sisters in Brussels, Ontario, Canada, and is described as single. In 1886/7 he is listed in the City directory for Brandon, Manitoba, Canada. His occupation is given as watchmaker, and he was a border at "Pacific Ave, bet 9th and 10th". In 1888 he is listed in the directory for Lennox, then 1889 in Deloraine, then back to Brandon in 1890. William's and Jennie's first child, Frederick William, was born in April of 1890, in Manitoba, and they were living in Brandon in 1891.

There were several Mitchell families who settled south of Brandon, in the area where William was in 1888/9. In Jennie's will she mentions the names of several nieces whom she wished to receive part of her estate should her son not be found. Five of the names mentioned (all the girls in the household, in fact) can be found in the household of John and Elizabeth Mitchell, in Deloraine in 1901. It is reasonable to assume that John is Jennie's brother, and to assume that Jennie may have come west with John's family and lived with them for a time. According to the birth dates and places of John's children, he and his family must have come to Manitoba about 1887/88. He and his wife and their first three children were born in Ontario, the last birth there took place in September 1886. The first child born in Manitoba had a birthdate of Jan 1889. Two of the other nieces mentioned can be linked to William Wesley Mitchell, who "came from the east" and settled in Naramata (near Penticton), British Columbia, Canada, in 1907. These two nieces (Freda Nuttall and Violet Noyes) are proven to be daughters of William Wesley through their marriage certificates. William Wesley's parents names are given in his death certificate, and his place of birth (Northumberland County, Ontario) is given in his obituary. This establishes that Jennie was probably born in Northumberland County too, to the same parents as William.

Another person mentioned in Jennie's will as a "friend", was Rossie Anderson, living in Vancouver, British Coumbia, at the time of Jennie's death. The death certificate of Rossie Mary Anderson, proves that she was Rossie Mary McKee, William Henry's niece, also known to be living, with her father, (step?) mother and brothers in Deloraine in 1901. Perhaps it was through this mutual acquaintance that William and Jennie met.
