Hi
Would be willing to bet the first Roy on your list (Mellett - 30 Jan 1914) is our Roy. The other one is too young. I know jumping to conclusions is not good exercise but think this one is ok, it seems to fit. Roy was unmarried - so that line closes. Irene.

11181 Vancouver addresses:
1918
1433 Commercial (b) 32, 1708 Charles (h)
1923
Wm H Mallett of Mallett & Munn, 511, 1210 Jervis (h)

I was in Vancouver, and have confirmed that this is the same William Henry. In 1920 his mother Mary Ann was in Vancouver living at a different address (950 Keefer) when she died. William bought 5 cemetery plots in Ocean View Cemetery in Burnaby: graves 1, 2, 3 and 4 of lot 45, and 2 of 44; Crown section. Mary Ann is in grave 4 lot 45, and Bert R Mckee is there too, in the same plot as Mary Ann apparently. William does not appear to have died in BC. He does not show up in the death indexes and he is not in one of his own cemetery plots.

In 1920 there is a Frederick W Mallett at the same address as William, listed as a jeweller's employee, and he works in William's shop. This turns out to be William's son, as verified by the 1901 census in Brandon. I found them in Brandon because of a reference in "The Central Canadians". William's shop at 1933 Commercial was quite tiny, and off the main shopping district, and his residence was a rooming house, so he does not appear to have been too well off. Later on as part of "Mallett and Munn" he moved uptown to 756 Robson, but this didn't last.

I have no idea where either of them went after 1923. Frederick was gone after 1921. Back to Manitoba seems a good bet, since neither one shows up in the death indexes in BC. Perhaps William's wife died back in Brandon, and that's why he picked up stakes and transplanted himself to BC.

In 1901 there is a "Elmer, Weston W" living with William's family in Brandon. He is 19, born Dec 20 1882 in Ontario, and is a nephew. He is described as a jeweller's apprentice. None of William's sisters married anyone named Elmer so far as I know, so this may be a clue to Jennie's maiden name, or it might be William's younger sister Martha Emily. I should be able to find him in birth indexes in Ontario for more info. The 1901 census also indicates that both William and Jennie were born in Ontario, so one would think they would have married there. I know I've looked for William in the marriage indexes before, but I'll look again, in a narrow time band, between 1881, when he was in the census in Brussels and said to be single, and 1890 when Frederick W was born.

1891 census: Brandon City, second part (east half of city) P21 L8 family 98

Mallett, W H, M, 35; E J, F, 22; F W, 2; R M, 7/12 (could be K M); M A, F 57

2 children, Mary Ann lives with them. He is a jeweller who employs one person.

I went through the entire Wrigley's directory for BC for 1924, they are no longer there. I also looked in Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Winnipeg and Toronto. They don't turn up in any of them. I have a hunch they went south into the States, Los Angeles maybe. I read that when I was in BC, a lot of people went south to Los Angeles. I should also pick a snap shot - say 1928, to check all of those other city directories. They might have been in transit in 1924.

William seems to have moved around a bit in Manitoba. The earliest I can place him is in Brandon in 1886/7, in 1888 Lennox, 1889 Deloraine, 1890 Brandon, 1892 Souris and Brandon. After that they seem to have stayed in Brandon and the block containing their shop on Rosser came to be known as the "Mallett Block".

11198 Violet was single, a General Servant in the household of John Welfare, Licenced Victualler, either for the family directly or in the pub that Mr Welfare operated. This was a family tradition of sorts. At least 2 of Violet's older sisters worked at this pub. MALLETT, Violet (I9730)

11199 Virden Story (page 229) - section Village of Elkhorn written by Mrs. F.W. Mallett, states that the town was wired in 1929 by F.W. Mallett and his assistant.

Residence: Fred Mallett lived above his tinsmith shop from 1910 to 1917.

Invented a seed cleaning machine.

On trip from Port Hope to Moosomin, NWT (Welwyn), when Fred would get bored on the train, and when the train stopped for fuel and water, he would get out and run along beside it. Also would run up to the stock car to feed the animals and tend to their needs with his father's (Albert William Mallett) help.

Fred also went hunting in the Riding Mountains - leaving early in the morning on foot, with a team of horses - making Foxwaren by nightfall, and the mountains the next day.
