  • Name Richard MALLET  [1, 2
Birth 23 Jul 1745  North Tawton, Devon, England Find all individuals with events at this location  [1
    Gender Male
    Note
    • Richard was a blacksmith when he married and later he owned a shop and plots of land, but by 1800 he was bankrupt and both were sold to pay off his debts. Richard is mentioned as being a Shopkeeper in the 'Exeter Flying Post' newspaper in the 12 June and 8 July 1800 editions (source WCSL). The property was known as 'Mark Tozers'. Other references in the London Gazette state that he was a dealer but they do not specify what he dealt in.

The Land Tax Assessments of 1780 show that Richard leased a property comprising three and a half acres including outbuildings, named 'Brocks' from a Mr Moses Chanter for the sum of £1.11.2. This later became the site of the 'Gostwyck Arms' coaching inn opposite the post office, however this burnt down in 1917.

Documents in the National Archives at Kew show that he employed apprentices between 1784 and 1796. It appears that the apprentices were indentured to him by the parish, probably to prevent them falling into poverty. A document held at the Devon Record Office shows that the indentures were approved by Hugh Mallett of Ash, magistrate - this is the only confirmation that members of the Ash and South Tawton/Petrockstowe branches knew each other. Hugh signed his surname with a double 't'.

Shortly after his business failed, he went over to Ireland to join his son John and his brother Robert, who two decades before had settled in Dublin. Richard took his wife and his other children William and Jane with him. In 1806, he set up an ironmongery business at 90 Marlborough Street in Dublin and in 1813/14 his son William became his business partner. He had died or retired by 1823 though no records have yet been found of his death. From 1808 onwards, he was worked as a smith on the building of St George's Church, Dublin.

His other son John set up a successful iron foundry business that played a major part in the industrial revolution in Ireland.

According to a article written in 1976 by Michael J. Tutty for the Old Dublin Society about Richard's family, it was said that:

'A Mallet's the tool of a carpenter's trade, Of different woods all Mallets are made, Of birch and of beech and other such trash, But the worst of all Mallets is Mallet of Ash'

It is believed that this was carved on the door of a courthouse by a disgruntled individual. It is known that Hugh Mallet of Ash, one of Richard's contempories was serving as a magistrate at that time. Hugh in his official capacity was a witness to some indentures for apprentices employed by Richard Mallett of North Tawton (see above).
