John MALLET
1714 - 1788 (74 years)-
Name John MALLET [1, 2] Birth 9 May 1714 South Tawton, Devon, England [3] Gender Male Note - Some members of John's family lived in Petrockstowe in Devon and at least two of them were stewards to the Earl of Orford (son of Britain's first Prime Minister) followed by service to Baron (Lord) Clinton a member the Trefusis family of Heanton Satchville and Cornwall. Other family members settled in Dublin and the USA.
According to the Land Tax Assessments of 1780, John leased a property in the centre of North Tawton called 'Goves' from John Luxmors for the sum of £0.4.0, now the site of the post office. It is believed that the property was named after a John Gove, a blacksmith from neighbouring Zeal Monachorum. His son Richard may have worked for John Mallet as a journeyman blacksmith. The property is mentioned in the marriage settlement for James Mallet of Sampford Courtenay, the son of John. [Source: Jean Shields]
In 1848, some 60 years after his death, his great grandson Robert Mallet of Dublin, a famous Irish engineer and scientist, visited John's grave in St. Peter's churchyard in North Tawton, Devon and erected a new headstone in his memory. Robert had the stone inscribed with 'John Mallett senior of this parish son of James of South Tawton erected by his great grandson Robert Mallet of Dublin 16 8 1848' thus confirming beyond any doubt the link between James Mallett the miller of Spreyton and his descendants in South Tawton, North Tawton and Dublin, Ireland. (Information kindly provided by the Devon Family History Society). A living descendant has confirmed that the headstone existed but after being severely damaged over the years, it was removed from the churchyard.
