Elizabeth MALLETT
Abt 1845 --
Name Elizabeth MALLETT [1] Birth Abt Sep 1845 Duloe, Cornwall, England [1, 2, 3] - There are several possibilities for the birth of this Elizabeth in the Civil Indexes for Liskeard, but this is the best fit because it matches the age given for Elizabeth in the 1871 census, and her daughter's name was Bessie Jane.
Charlotte Mallett has been selected as Elizabeth's mother because the two of them were in the Liskeard Union Workhouse at the time of the 1851 census. Their relationship is not given in the census record, and they were not enumerated together (Elizabeth was on Page 6, Charlotte was on Page 7). Elizabeth was only 6 years old, while Charlotte was 25 and unmarried, the perfect age to be the mother of an illegitmate child of 6, and they were both born in Duloe, consistent with later census records. They may have been kept apart in the Workhouse as a matter of policy, and Elizabeth may have been an orphan.
While the census record makes it clear that they were both inmates in an institution located in Liskeard, it does not specifically name the institution. Liskeard Union Workhouse has been assumed.
