Humphrey MALLETT
1756 - 1838 (81 years)-
Name Humphrey MALLETT Birth 18 Mar 1756 Sheepwash, Devon, England - Humphrey has been connected to Henry Mallet and Elizabeth Vanstone based on the age of death recorded on his tombstone, and the proximity of Sheewash to Frithelstock and Langtree. The tombstone says he died Jan 29 1838 in his 81st year, which probably means he was 80 years of age at the time, giving a birth date of 1858. Another clue is the marriage record for Humphrey and Catherine which said he was from Langtree 'b/s', short for "but a sojourner", which means he was living in Langtree at that moment but came from somewhere else. Of course it doesn't say where.
Gender Male Note - The birth dates recorded for this family are actually christening dates taken directly from the parish registers for Frithelstock and Langtree, with the exceptions of James, whose birth date is taken from his letter to his son James, and Richard, whose birth date is assumed to be Feb 4 1802, since he is recorded as buried on Feb 4 and christened on Feb 5. I make the assumption he died shortly after birth, hence no time for a christening before his death. He may well have been born before the 4th, I just needed a birth date the same or earlier than a death date.
Catherine was 28 when her first child was born and 50 when the last one was born.
Humphrey paid taxes to the estate of Lord Rolle from 1799 (when we started looking) to 1831 "for Birchill". In 1832 George starts paying. In 1841 we find George's family at Birchill in the census. This is where I assume my GG Grandfather James (b 1799) was born. We visited the farm, It's being fixed up as a holiday place by some people from London. Apparently the buildings had fallen into a state of disrepair. It is difficult to say which building they may actually have lived in. The main house was built later than 1799.
I am very confident this is the correct family:
My GG Grandfather James' christening is one month later than the birth date I have from his letter to James Jr (1864). It is in Langtree as we suspected. I had his birth year as 1799, but didn't have a specific date. It is the only Mallett family in the parish (no confusion).
Catherine marries Richard Bond, and I find a Richard and Catherine Bond in Beverly Twp in Canada. This fits with "your aunt from Beverly" (James Sr to James Jr 1864), and answers the "Bond" mystery. We thought James Sr.’s wife was called Bond. I now know it to be Crook (James Sr to James Jr letters, marriage index), but I felt there must still be some significance to the name Bond.
James son of Humphrey son of Humphrey is living on an estate of 1000 aces in the right place at the right time for Edith McCracken's visit to England.
I have no such corroborative evidence for Humphrey Sr.’s connection to the family of Henry Mallet(t) in Sheepwash. Only a date and location which fit.
Humphrey's tombstone says he was in his 81st year when he died Jan 29, 1838. The Humphrey from Sheepwash was born Mar 18 1756. If he was 80 when he died, he was likely born in 1757, because he would have turned 80 in 1837, his death being so early in the year. If he was 81, he was born in 1756. It seems quite probable they are one and the same. It's not uncommon for death dates on tombstones to be out by a year or two.
The tombstones in Langtree are located behind the church, toward the very back. There is a row including Humphrey Jr under a large Beech tree 2 rows from the rear of the cemetery. Humphrey Sr is 4 rows closer to the church.
The one and only clue we have that our family is indeed related to the Mallett's of Ash:
Excerpt from a letter sent to Chester Mallett by Walter Mallett (Bath, England), wherein he explains how they are related:
"I must explain exactly who I am before I go any further. Your grandfather I understand from Ray was called William Mallett and practiced as a conveyancing solicitor before he emigrated to Prince Edward Island about 1837. He was the brother of my grandfather John who was a jeweler and watchmaker in Barnstaple. In that case we are second cousins. My mother is still living at 92 1/2 and recollects when she was a young married woman hearing of your grandfather as uncle William, who with another brother and a married sister had emigrated to Canada a few years before but she cannot recall the name of the married sister. My father died about 10 years ago & I was his only surviving son and he was called John and the only son of his father."
Hazel's notes:
Mr. Mallett said at the beginning of his family tree The name of my grandfather was Humfrey and he was the son, or grandson of Hugh Mallett who owned a small manor called Ashe, near Iddesleigh, N. Devon, who are all buried in Iddesleigh. Humfrey and his wife Katherine lived at Frikelstoke Priory 3 miles from Torrington and are buried in Frikelstoke churchyard.
My note:
Hazel has a written note which states Humfrey must have been Walter's G Grandfather (his grandfather was John). I know Humphrey is buried in Langtree, not Frithelstock, but there is a connection to Frithelstock because Walter's Grandfather John was born there, and James Mallett lived at Frithelstock Priory up to 1902 when he died.
I believe there are enough similarities in what Walter says to conclude that we are indeed related to them, and therefore to Henry Mallett/Mary Brimmacombe, because information relating to that family talks about John the watchmaker. That makes the Hugh Mallett clue a viable one to pursue.
