Dear Paul
I very much doubt whether this Institute will be able to assist you (and you will shortly find out why).
Allow me to explain that the registration of births, deaths and marriages was only made obligatory by law in the Cape Colony in 1895 and in 1900 for the rest of South Africa. That is why the High Commission in London as well as the South African Department of Home Affairs would not be able to help. Early birth registrations for the Cape (from ca. 1895 tot 1910) are kept in the National Archives in Cape Town (to which we have no direct access).
For births before 1895 one has to rely on church records and to be more specific - baptismal registers. Although we have all the church records (baptisms, marriages and membership) of the three Afrikaanspeaking Dutch Reformed sister churches (NG Church Hervomde Church and Gereformeerde Church) from 1660 up to 1995 on microfilm, we have no records of any English speaking denomination available.
Therefore, unless George Moss was a member of one of the three Dutch Reformed denominations, we would not be in a position to assist. Anglican records are kept at Wits University Library in Johannesburg, Methodist records at the Cory Library of Rhodes University in Grahmstown etc.
With kind regards
Leon Endemann
Hello Paul
Yes, I remember your MOSS family.
There are no indexes to births in SA as there are in the UK. I can go to the Cape Town Archives and search through the birth registers they have for East London for MOSS births, but would like you to be aware that I might not find anything. If I find any MOSS entries, I would be able to take a photograph of the entry and email it to you.
My hourly rate is £10 an hour.
I don't keep records of research for longer than 3 months, so would have to ask you to send me
1. the names of those to search for
2. the dates between which you would like me to search.
About the black blood/Dutch Afrikaans rumour: it might well be true. In the early days when white women were scarce, many of the Dutch settlers had relationships with black women and in some cases married slaves. If your MOSS family married into a Dutch/Afrikaans family, there might well be a black woman or a slave further back in the family tree.
Best wishes
Anne
Dear mr Smith

Subject: Moss Baptisms
Dear Sir/Madam
I'm not sure this is the correct place but here goes. I have been told by a family member that we may have Dutch Afrikaan in our ancestory. I have for the past two years been trying to locate members of my family in and around East London. Now I'm not sure if the name MOSS is very Dutch at all. I was wondering if you could check your baptism records for such a name.
The family I'm looking for is as follows
George MOSS born 1893 East London.
John'Jack' MOSS
Henry MOSS
Ginny MOSS
George is my Great Gradfather. I know they lived at 30 Tennyson street, East London during the 1st World War as John is down as George & Henry's next of kin.
I don't know if you can help in anyway? I do hope so as this has been a big mystery.
Kindest Regards
Paul Smith
