  • Name Eliza Ann MALLETT
Birth 16 May 1830  Guinea Street, Exeter, Devon, England Find all individuals with events at this location  [1
Christening 27 Jun 1830  St Mary Major, Exeter, Devon, England Find all individuals with events at this location  [2
    Gender Female
Census 18 Apr 1834  Lot 25, Concession 1, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada Find all individuals with events at this location  [3
    • Name as enumerated: James Mallett. Only the head of household is mentioned by name. This property is right along the Huron Road. The writing is difficult to read but it appears to say 196 acres uncultivated, 4 acres cultivated. He owns both the north and south halves of the lot. 1 male and 1 female over 16. 2 males and 2 females under 16, 6 people in the family. No names other than head of household are listed, but the number of children, male and female under 16 matches perfectly the size of their family as it must have been in that year. They have 2 "milch" cows, and 3 other cattle (hard to make out). A second look at this microfilm indicates 2 oxen, nothing else. Difficult to read. No dwelling place is listed, but it was likely a log shanty. No dwelling place is listed for most of the people enumerated, but if you look at the headings for this section, it seems they were looking for a "proper" house such as frame or brick. Perhaps if such a house was not present, it was not listed. Just as well, their assessment would have been higher. Henrietta will be born later this year.
Their ages in 1834, calculated backwards from the 1851 census where their ages are listed:
      James - 35, Elizabeth - 29, Frederick - 7, James - 5, Eliza - 4, Ann - 2.

    • Name as enumerated: James Mallatt. Only the head of household is mentioned by name. 8 acres cultivated, 92 uncultivated. Lot 25 1st concession, south 1/2. 2 milch cows, 2 other cattle, property assessed at 40 lbs. 1 male and 1 female over 16. 2 males and 4 females under 16. Henrietta and Elizabeth appear to have been born.
      Their ages: James - 38, Elizabeth - 32, Frederick - 10, James - 8, Eliza - 7, Ann - 5, Henrietta - 3, Elizabeth - 1.
Census 25 Mar 1838  Lot 25, Concession 1, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada Find all individuals with events at this location  [5
    • Name as enumerated: James Mallet. Only the head of household is mentioned by name. 92 acres uncultivated (looks like) 28 cultivated (doesn't add up). Can't make out the rest. Property assessed at 60 lbs 8 s.
Census 1839  Lot 25, Concession 1, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada Find all individuals with events at this location  [6
    • Name as enumerated: James Mallett. Only the head of household is mentioned by name. Not a part lot. This contradicts the 1837 assessment which says he only has the south 1/2, but substantiates the 1834 assessment which seems to indicate 200 acres. Uncultivated looks like 189 but might be 89 (unless he owns the north half too). Cultivated is 11. 2 oxen and 2 milch cows. 62 lbs 16 s assessment. Family is still 8 people.
Census 1840  Lot 28, Concession 3, Wilmot Township, Waterloo County, Ontario, Canada Find all individuals with events at this location  [7
    • Name as enumerated: James Mallat. Only the head of household is mentioned by name. 3d concession lot 28, south part of lot. 100 acres, all uncultivated, assessed at 20 lbs. The family is still shown as only 8 people. 1 male and female over 16, 2 males under 16, 4 females under 16. So now they have moved to the place we thought they had originally, but William appears not yet to be born, even though his obituary says he was born in 1839. One wonders why after so many years clearing land bit by bit on the other place he chooses to start all over again. Did William Daniels give him a nice bit of cash for the land already cleared, enough incentive to start over? Perhaps James and William had an arrangement all along. We know that they knew each other since 1820 at least. Now too he has 2 teenage sons who can swing an axe and help out.
      Their ages: James - 41, Elizabeth - 35, Frederick - 13, James - 11, Eliza - 10, Ann - 8, Henrietta - 6, Elizabeth - 4.

William Daniels is shown in the census on Con 1, Lot 25, 75 acres uncultivated, 25 cultivated. This property isn't conveyed to Mr Daniels until 1850. There is an as yet undiscovered connection between James and this William Daniels. James was a witness at William's wedding in Devon.

    • Only census information available, nothing about the property. This is the first census in which all names of individuals within the household were listed. Eliza was enumerated twice, once at home, and once as a servant in the 2 story brick house of Dugald McLachlan. The family lives in a 1 story frame house. All the children are listed as single. The first four are shown as born in England, all of the rest in Canada. None of the children are listed as attending school.

      Their ages: James - 53, Elizabeth - 46, Frederick - 24, James - 22, Eliza - 21, Ann - 19, Henrietta - 17, Elizabeth - 15, William - 13, Henry - 10, Caroline - 5.

    • Thomas 38, Eliza 35, Maria 16, Eliza 9, Henrietta 7, "Adeled" 3, Carolina 1. Thomas and Eliza were born in England, all the rest in Ontario. 200 acres, 70 improved, 9 pasture.
Census 4 Apr 1881  Puslinch Township, Wellington County, Ontario, Canada Find all individuals with events at this location  [9
    • Thomas 52, Eliza 50, Eliza 20, Henrietta 18 (could be 19), Adelade 12, Caroline 10, Jane 6.

On Line 14 just above the Paddocks is John "Gilcrist", who is to become the husband of Eliza.

    Note
    • Eliza is the only one whose birth (christening actually) record I have been able to find. She is in the IGI, and was christened in Exeter, Devonshire, in Saint Mary Major Parish. She and her husband lived in Puslinch, as did at least one of her daughters, who married a Gilchrist, and whose family seems to have stayed in the area. James was probably living with her when he died, all of his letters to William Henry having come from Puslinch. Marriage date for Eliza and Thomas is taken from St. James Church parish register. He was a bachelor, she a spinster when they married. They had a license. Marriage was witnessed by James and Ann Mallett.

It seems Eliza's record in the IGI is the result of a systematic extraction. Her birth date is taken from the 1901 census. It might be the 26th, not 16, it's not clear on the return. I say her birthplace is Exeter; I don't really know that, I only know she was christened there. She knows she was born in England, every census return says so.

I went to Puslinch township in July 1996. I hoped to find Aikens and Gilchrist on the Paddock farm and the John Gilchrist farm, but no luck. The Paddock place is still an active farm, but most of the other farms, including the John Gilchrist place, have not been actively farmed for quite some time. Most of the farms in the township seem to have gone back to bush, with some quite mature trees on them. There are still some buildings, falling down, on the Gilchrist place. I did find an Aikens on what looks like the James Aikens place, today called "Aikensville".

      1857
At the christening of Eliza Ann Paddock at St. James church in Wilmot July 19, Thomas Paddock is described as a farmer from "Beverley".

      1861
      Not checked.

      1871
      Thomas 38, Eliza 35, Maria 16, Eliza 9, Henrietta 7, Adeled 3, Carolina 1.

      1881
Thomas 52, Eliza 50, Eliza 20, Henrietta 18, Adelaide 12, Caroline 10, Jane 6. Maria has gone off and married John Scott. He was likely a neighbour, there were several Scott families, but I have not pursued the connection. On the line just above the Paddocks is John Gilchrist, a family of one, who will marry Eliza.

      Feb 11 1888
James Mallett is living here when he dies at age 89. In 1881, he lived with William Henry. That's where he drew up his will. I assume he is living here because his letters to William Henry in his last days are from Puslinch. His death registration also says he died in Puslinch.

      1891
Thomas 60, Eliza 60, Caroline 19, Jane 15. Christopher Gregor lives with the family as a farm labourer. His parents are both German, Lutheran, he was born in Ontario. According to the write-up in the historical atlas for Wellington County, he marries one of the remaining 2 girls. It simply says "Mrs Christian Gregor". Eliza, Henrietta, and Adelaide are all married and living in Puslinch Twp.

      1901
Thomas 70, Eliza Ann 70, Caroline 29. Christian Gregor and Jane are gone. I assume he married her. They are not living in Puslinch Twp. Caroline is a spinster. Their religion is listed as "Episcopalian", which is the American term for Anglican or Church of England. Don't understand that. Thomas and Eliza lease all 200 acres of their land plus 1 house (of 2) and 2 barns (of 2) to their daughter Adelaide and her husband Thomas Aikens.

There is an extensive history of the Paddock family in Puslinch Twp in the historical atlas of Wellington County. They were all C of E to begin with. Some attended the C of E in Galt, some attended other local churches of different denominations. It never says which church Thomas and Eliza attended, but the C of E in Galt seems a good bet. The records for the C of E churches in Cambridge were never sent to the archives in London, so if I want to see them I have to make arrangements locally. I will go and poke around the graveyards and see if I can find Paddock. I'll start with trinity, it's the biggest and likely the oldest.

I found Trinity church cemetery in Galt (next to Parklawn) but Eliza Ann and Thomas are not buried there. I checked with the lady who has all of the cemetery records, and she gave me the names of all of the Paddocks buried there. None of them fit, except maybe Caroline, but I neglected to write down the date of death. I don't think they are in the municipal cemeteries in Cambridge either (they have a database), but I'll check again. I checked the Killean and Crief cemeteries in Puslinch Twp; there are some Paddocks but not mine. I didn't even find the Gilchrists there which really surprised me, because the Killean cemetery is right at the corner of their farm.

Thomas and Eliza are buried in New Hope cemetery in Hespeler (Cambridge). The tombstone says she died in 1919 at age 89, but this is wrong. I found her obituary in the Galt paper dated Nov 23 1920, and I found her death in the civil registrations listed as Nov 19, 1920. The obituary gives no clue as to the whereabouts of her brothers and sisters, it doesn't even mention that her name was Mallett. I also know the date of her birth, so she lived to be 90, not 89. Three of her daughters are buried in the same cemetery: Adelaide, Henrietta, and Carrie. I also discovered this week that Carrie did not die a spinster, as I had thought, but married Henrietta's husband William Aikens after Henrietta died. Carrie did not have any children of her own, according to her obituary which I found in the Hespeler paper at the Cambridge archives. I also discovered from Carrie's obit that Jane's married name is Krueger, not Gregor. I checked it out in the marriage indexes and found her marriage to "Christopher Kruger". So there is no "Christian Gregor" at all, but I'm not sure of the last name. The marriage certificate (hand written) seems to say "Kruger", the obituary clearly said "Krueger". The latter makes sense to me because it might have been pronounced "Kregor" (short e), and the census enumerator wrote it down as "Gregor".

There is a great deal of longevity in this branch. Eliza Ann lived to be 90, Maria 68, Eliza A 95, Henrietta 34, Adelaide 84, Carrie 92, and Jane I don't yet know, but in 1962, when Carrie died, she was the only surviving sister and she would have been 86.
