- John Mallett, a labourer, enlisted in the 98th Regiment of Foot in 1831 at Plymouth when he was eighteen.

- John served for 21 years - 15 at home, then 2 in China and 4 in India. During his service the 98th Foot took part in the First China, or Opium, War and the Second Anglo-Sikh War on the North West Frontier.
A Regimental Board at Peshawar in 1851 decided to discharge John due to "General bad health caused by climate". His character and conduct were described as "exemplary". He was finally discharged at Chatham
in 1852.
John received an "out-pensioner" Chelsea Pension and he was described as a "Chelsea Pensioner" in the 1861, 1871 and 1881 Censuses for St.Cleer, Cornwall. (He was, however also described as a "copper miner"
in the 1861 Census). The Regimental Register of Pensioners shows that he was paid a pension of one shilling per day which he collected quarterly at Bodmin.
