There was however the birth of a George Mallett registered in Bideford in the June quarter of 1854 (5b 508). Thomas was from Alwington, near Bideford, and the name and date fit. George's sister Mary may have been registered in Bideford at the same time, although their ages are given as 1 year apart in the census.
