Port Hope, Ontario, Canada [7] |
- 1881 Port Hope:
Mallett, Josias, age: 30, b: England, Methodist, Teamster
Mallett, Serah, age: 30, b: England (wife)
Mallett, William J., age: 6, b: Ontario
Mallett, Henry, age: 1, b: Ontario
Two houses down:
Bew, John, age: 73, b: England, Church of England, Labourer
Bew, Elizabeth, age: 70, b: England (his wife)
Bews are shown here because Elizabeth Bew is shown living with Josiah's family in 1891 census. Could be just neighbours or could be related somehow (maybe to Serah).

Note |
12 Dec 1889 |
Port Hope, Ontario, Canada [5] |
- As per GW : http://www.nhb.com/hunter/D1832B.htm provides some other references to Malletts in Port Hope. It lists Dec 12, 1889 as the day that brothers Edward (5) and Charles (8) sons of Josia Mallett, drowned while crossing Corbett's Pond. If Charles and Edward were sons to Josia (I302), they fit in the gap between Henry and Etta and neither would have shown on either the 1881 census or the 1891 census. I would suggest you could add these names under Josia as probable sons.

Census |
15 Apr 1891 |
B 1/5 - 210, Hope Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada [5, 8] |
- Josiah Mallett, age 40, b. England, parents b. England, Teamster, Methodist
Serah, age 40, b. England, parents b. England, unemployed in week before census
William, age 16, b. Ontario
Harry, age 11, b. Ontario
Etta, age 4, b. Ontario
Note: also included an Elizabeth Bew, age 82, b. England, parents b. England, Church of England [in 1881 census, John & Elizabeth Bew lived two houses down.]
On another page, still in Port Hope, staying with Selena Boundy, age 66 was William Geo. Mallett, age 16, b: Ontario. Not sure if related in any way.
[Update: Dec/10 Selena Boundy seems to be formerly Selena Hutchings (nee Chislett), Sarah Hutchings mother. Looks like she remarried John Boundy after George Hutchings died.]
This census showed birthplace of each person's parents. In all cases here, it said England.
As per GW : Getting back to the Mallets in Port Hope. Your entry for Josiah (I302) makes note of a William Geo. Mallett, a 16 year old living with Selena Boundy in Port Hope in 1891. My brother has a postcard, postmarked Jan 1909 in Port Hope to Mrs H Mallett on 198 Seaton Street Toronto, congratulating her on her new baby. (This is probably on the birth of Dora, RB's mother). The letter is signed "Selena". This may be the the same Selena Boundy with whom William Geo. was living or it may be her granddaughter Selena M Hormel. Either way, it further links the William Geo living with Selena in 1891 to Josiah and Sarah and to my grandfather Henry/Harry (I306) and provides a big hint that Selena Boundy was somehow related to either Josiah or Sarah.
My brother and I became intrigued and wanted to find out more about this. We found a number of internet references which seemed to point to indicate that William Mallet had been counted twice in the 1891 census and, in fact, the Wm George Mallet living with Selena Boundy is William Mallett (I307), son of Josiah(I302) and Sarah (I305). The proof of this came when my brother located the entry for Sarah Mallett in the Port Hope Death Registry. Wm George Mallett is named as the informant and he is listed as the son of the deceased. Sarah (I305) was born Jan 27, 1851 and died Oct 11, 1928 according to this entry.
