MALLETT, ROBERT (Full Name) (1867 - 1950)
Born in Norwich 5th November 1867 of Norwich parents (names unknown). Died in Norwich Saturday, 4th February 1950, aged 82 years. He married Julia ---? and they had three daughters and two sons - none had artistic leanings. He was my mother's cousin on her mother's side. He was apprenticed to the shoe trade at Howlett and Whites, Norwich, and remained a shoemaker by occupation. As a lad he was also friendly with Obadiah Short (see J. W. Pigg). He and his own cousin, James W. Pigg, first gave him the love for art. Later Robert Mallett studied at the Norwich School of Art for several years under the fine art teachers Walter Scott and Mr. Minns. At the same time the famous Sir Alfred J. Munnings, P.P.R.A., was student with him, and although their social status was very different they remained great friends until the end of their lives. While a student at the Norwich School of Art, Robert Mallett won 1st prizes four years in succession for finest landscape in oils. His work reflects the 'Style of the Norwich School of Painters' and his subjects were all taken from around Norwich and district. Trees predominate his pictures and these are painted with a botanist's knowledge. All his work was done in oils and his works are in many private collections. There is a fine example, "Crostwick Common, Nr. Norwich" in Boot and Shoe Union, St. Crispin Hall, Pitt Street, Norwich, and another in the Board. Room of Norvic Shoe Co., Norwich, (his late employers), "Cottages and Trees in Earlham Park, Norwich", both paintings are 36 x 28 ins. At his best his work is excellent. I possess two of his landscapes. Robert Mallett lived at 121 Marlborough Road, Norwich. (The writer was a pupil of Robert Mallett.)
Shortened notes by Wilfrid W. Johnson, Norwich, October 1966.
