Henry Sutton MALLETT [1] |

Abt Jun 1871 |
Norwich, Norfolk, England [2] |
- Henry was born out of wedlock. His mother Susannah claimed that the father was a neighbouring farmer called Henry Sutton, hence her son's given names. Henry denied that he was the father, so Susannah, at the age of 22, took Mr Sutton to court for "Breach of Promise of Marriage". During the trial Mr. Sutton tried to cast aspersions on Susannah's character, implying that the father might have been someone else, but the jury didn't buy it, and Susannah was awarded £200.
The trial proceedings were reported in "The Norfolk News", on April 1, 1871.
£200 was a significant amount of money in 1871, equivalent to 1000 days wages for a skilled tradesman. (From the UK National Archives Currency Converter). We do not know if Mr Sutton ever paid up. As farmers are wont to do, he insisted during the trial that he had very little money.
