      Henrietta was 14 years older than Alfred, but she lied about her age in 1911 and 1901, perhaps to give the impression that she was only slightly older. She took about 10 years off.

    • No marriage has been found for Alfred and Annie, but they were clearly living together in 1939, identified as married, and Annie had assumed the name Bobe. Alfred's first wife, Henrietta Mary (Mallett) Goodman, was still alive in 1921 when the first of Alfred and Annie's children was born, and emigrated to Australia with her daughter Marguerite (Bobe) Smith in 1922. Henrietta died in 1927, and in her will was described as a "Widow", but clearly she wasn't. It seems likely that Alfred either abandoned Henrietta and Marguerite, or that he and Henrietta just decided to go their separate ways, but in any event there probably wasn't a divorce, and therefore no wedding for Alfred and Annie. That this Alfred is the same Alfred that married Henrietta seems very likely, since there is only one Alfred Bobe found in the 1939 Register, and his date of birth fits with that given in previous censuses. How he came to move from Cornwall to Loughborough is a mystery though.
