    • William was a Farmer of 170 acres employing 4 labourers and 1 boy. Augustus was 3 months old at the time of the census.
    Note
    • The name has been found in many different source documents spelled either "Furze" or "Furse". No doubt it is pronounced "Furze", which likely accounts for the many occurrences of that spelling, especially in earlier documents when phonetic spelling was much more common.

      "Furse" has been chosen as the primary spelling because that is generally the way it is found in the most recent documents consulted, and because that is the way it is spelled on Thomazin (Furse) Mallett's tombstone in Langtree. She was apparently from the same family, being "of East Putford Barton". William Bray might actually be her younger brother.




      I found this family in the 1851 census. I am supposing that this Mary is Humphrey Mallett's daughter for three reasons:

      The proximity of east Putford Barton to Langtree,
      Mary is no longer in Humphrey's household in 1851
      The son has "Mallett" for a middle name.

      William may be related to Thomazin (Furse) Mallett, perhaps a brother. She was also from East Putford Barton.

      Mary Furse is mentioned in Humphrey's will.
