Thay had a relationship beginning in 1855 and actually lived together while he was still married. They had several children out of wedlock between 1855 and 1864. Their surnames were recorded as both Abrahams and Mallett. In the 1861 census John was Head of Household, and Rebecca was described as (his) Mistress. She was listed with her maiden name, and the two children that they had together at that point had the Abrahams surname too, listed as "Step-Daughters".
