    • Her occupation was, as in 1881, "Manageress Refreshment Rooms". She was single, and occupied two rooms at the address given. Her age was listed as 48, which was not correct, but all of the other details fit.

There is a family story that says she was somehow in the employ of the Royal family. There is nothing in the census to indicate that directly, but Portsea is just a short ferry ride from the Isle of Wight, where Queen Victoria had a favourite residence, and is buried.

    • Her occupation at time of death was given as "Spinster formerly a Refreshment Rooms Manageress".

Cause of death: (1) Valvular degeneration of Heart (2) Senile Dementia & Marasmus (wasting of the body).

The informant was F.W. Mallett, nephew. This is undoubtedly the son of her brother John, the jeweller in Jersey. He was known to be living in London in 1901. Her estate of £1018 12s 5d was left to her brother John.
Burial Aft 14 Jan 1922  Brompton Cemetery, Brompton, London, England Find all individuals with events at this location  [8
    • A family history written by a descendant of Mary Thorne (Mallett) Henriod mentions that Helen was in the service of Queen Victoria, and that she was buried at "Royal Palace, London, England".

One wonders if "Crystal Palace", the area of London she was living in in 1901, perhaps became "Royal Palace" in the hands of some overzealous family researcher. There is no evidence available linking her to service to the Royal Family, except for the fact that she lived in Portsea in 1891, very near to the Isle of Wight where Queen Victoria's favourite palace was, and where the good queen is buried. There was a Mallet in service to Queen Victoria; Marie (Adean) Mallet, but she was from a different family.
