Generation: 1

  1. 1.  Sarah HUTCHINGS was born on 23 Jan 1850 in Seavington St Mary, Somerset, England; died on 11 Oct 1928 in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • SW Group: 4
    • UKC 1881: N
    • Alternate Name: Sarah Mallett
    • Census: 3 Apr 1881, Port Hope, Durham East, Ontario, Canada
    • Census: 15 Apr 1881, Port Hope, Ontario, Canada
    • Note: 12 Dec 1889, Port Hope, Ontario, Canada
    • Census: 15 Apr 1891, B 1/5 - 210, Hope Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada
    • Census: 1901
    • Census: 1911

    Notes:

    Census:
    1881 Port Hope:
Mallett, Josias, age: 30, b: England, Methodist, Teamster
Mallett, Serah, age: 30, b: England (wife)
    Mallett, William J., age: 6, b: Ontario
Mallett, Henry, age: 1, b: Ontario

    Two houses down:
Bew, John, age: 73, b: England, Church of England, Labourer
Bew, Elizabeth, age: 70, b: England (his wife)

Bews are shown here because Elizabeth Bew is shown living with Josiah's family in 1891 census. Could be just neighbours or could be related somehow (maybe to Serah).

    Note:
As per GW : http://www.nhb.com/hunter/D1832B.htm provides some other references to Malletts in Port Hope. It lists Dec 12, 1889 as the day that brothers Edward (5) and Charles (8) sons of Josia Mallett, drowned while crossing Corbett's Pond. If Charles and Edward were sons to Josia (I302), they fit in the gap between Henry and Etta and neither would have shown on either the 1881 census or the 1891 census. I would suggest you could add these names under Josia as probable sons.

    Census:
Josiah Mallett, age 40, b. England, parents b. England, Teamster, Methodist
Serah, age 40, b. England, parents b. England, unemployed in week before census
    William, age 16, b. Ontario
    Harry, age 11, b. Ontario
    Etta, age 4, b. Ontario
Note: also included an Elizabeth Bew, age 82, b. England, parents b. England, Church of England [in 1881 census, John & Elizabeth Bew lived two houses down.]

On another page, still in Port Hope, staying with Selena Boundy, age 66 was William Geo. Mallett, age 16, b: Ontario. Not sure if related in any way.
[Update: Dec/10 Selena Boundy seems to be formerly Selena Hutchings (nee Chislett), Sarah Hutchings mother. Looks like she remarried John Boundy after George Hutchings died.]

This census showed birthplace of each person's parents. In all cases here, it said England.

As per GW : Getting back to the Mallets in Port Hope. Your entry for Josiah (I302) makes note of a William Geo. Mallett, a 16 year old living with Selena Boundy in Port Hope in 1891. My brother has a postcard, postmarked Jan 1909 in Port Hope to Mrs H Mallett on 198 Seaton Street Toronto, congratulating her on her new baby. (This is probably on the birth of Dora, RB's mother). The letter is signed "Selena". This may be the the same Selena Boundy with whom William Geo. was living or it may be her granddaughter Selena M Hormel. Either way, it further links the William Geo living with Selena in 1891 to Josiah and Sarah and to my grandfather Henry/Harry (I306) and provides a big hint that Selena Boundy was somehow related to either Josiah or Sarah.

My brother and I became intrigued and wanted to find out more about this. We found a number of internet references which seemed to point to indicate that William Mallet had been counted twice in the 1891 census and, in fact, the Wm George Mallet living with Selena Boundy is William Mallett (I307), son of Josiah(I302) and Sarah (I305). The proof of this came when my brother located the entry for Sarah Mallett in the Port Hope Death Registry. Wm George Mallett is named as the informant and he is listed as the son of the deceased. Sarah (I305) was born Jan 27, 1851 and died Oct 11, 1928 according to this entry.

    Census:
As per GW : The transcription at automatedgenealogy.com for this record shows Josie, Sarah and Ella, but examining the actual image it is clearly Josia, Sarah and Etta.

This census gives us birth dates for all three: Josia (I302) 22 Sep 1850 from England 1872 Sarah(I305): 23 Jan 1850 from England 1855 and Etta (I308) 22 Dec 1886.

    Census:
As per GW : The 1911 census has Etta, now married and with last name Dann, and her son William Dann born Nov 1908 both living with Josiah and Sarah.

Sarah married Josiah MALLETT on 28 Feb 1874 in Cobourg, Ontario, Canada. Josiah (son of William MALLETT, Jr and Elizabeth GLOVER) was born on 22 Sep 1850 in Alwington, Devon, England; died on 3 Mar 1922 in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

Have 1876 from BW's ancestry.com site. Not sure which one is right. Check the census.

Marriage cert shows Hamilton Twp as birthplace.

    Census:

    Census:
William Geo. Mallett living with Selena Boundy. This is second entry for William Geo. in the 1891 census.

    Census:
Josiah Mallett, age 40, b. England, parents b. England, Teamster, Methodist
Serah, age 40, b. England, parents b. England, unemployed in week before census

    Census:
As per GW : The 1901 census shows one William Mallett in the Port Hope area. He lives with his wife (Edna or Edie born Sept 11, 1874) and daughter (Elsie born Oct 12, 1900) and my grandfather Henry/"Harry" (I306). Harry's DOB is listed as Nov 9, 1880 and this is consistent with the ages listed in the 1881 and 1891 census. William (I307) is listed as born Oct 9, 1874 and again this is consistent with the previous two censuses.

    Occupation:
As per GW : Additionally, although it is difficult to read, it looks to me like William (I307) in the 1901 census listed his profession as CarriageTrimmer. The 1911 census shows William George Mallet living on Cavan St and working as a Carpenter. The William G Mallett who married Edith Bowen in 1899 was an Upholsterer. All are trades which are associated with the Carriage Industry. According to http://www.porthopehistory.com/1907businesses/index.htm T B Chalk was a local business involved in the Carriage Industry and operated it's plant on Cavan St.

    Census:
As per GW : Only one William Mallet appears in the 1911 census for Port Hope. He has a middle name of George but a different year of birth (1877) than any of the William entries before. But this William George is born in the same month and also has wife named Edith born same month/different year and a daughter Elsie born same month/different year as recorded for William (I307) in 1901. This William George is listed as a Baptist, as was the William in the 1901 census. The 1891 Census shows both Selena Boundy and the William George Mallett living with her to be Methodists. When William (I307) was living at home with Josiah and Sarah in 1881 and 1891, all family members were listed as Methodists.

William married Edith BOWEN on 8 Nov 1899 in Port Hope, Ontario, Canada. Edith (daughter of John BOWEN and Sarah Ann) was born on 11 Sep 1876 in Hope Township, Durham County, Ontario, Canada. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Died:
As per GW : http://www.nhb.com/hunter/D1832B.htm provides some other references to Malletts in Port Hope. If Charles and Edward were sons to Josia (I302), they fit in the gap between Henry and Etta and neither would have shown on either the 1881 census or the 1891 census. I would suggest you could add these names under Josia as probable sons.

    Notes:

    Note:
As per GW : Etta and Thomas (Tom) managed a ranch (The 7U) outside of High River Alberta. I visited them with my parents around 1969+/-. At that time the ranch was slowly being closed. I understood that the land had been appropriated by the government, but it was probably more complex than simply that. The story I heard was that the ranch had been left in a will to "destitute cowboys" and was operating, I believe, as a charity or trust. At any rate, Tom and Etta retired and moved to High River Alberta and we visited them again in the summer of 1973. By this time they were both well into their 80's. http://www.afhs.ab.ca shows Thomas and Etta Dann (both 1886 -1976) buried in the Highwood Cemetery in High River.

    Notes:

    Birth:
As per GW : I am unsure about the year of birth for Etta Soderberg. It would seem to be in the range of 1905 to 1920.

    Note:
As per RB and GW : Etta played for the famous Edmonton Grads women's basketball team . She became blind and was blind for years after she left basketball. After many years she got her sight back again. There are various publications in Canada that show the pictures of the team members and you will see Etta. The Edmonton grads were a group of women who won just about every honor in basketball both in Canada and internationally. They traveled all over the world during the 1920's. There is a picture of her with the team in 1938 at http://www.cshof.ca/accessible/collection_detail.php?i=1217&t=p

I do not know if the grads still exist. I do know that they were still around in the 1950's. I searched them on the internet a few nights ago and saw that the original grads had a record of 530 wins with only 20 losses or there abouts over a number of years.

As per GW email of Feb 16/09: We met the daughter Etta (Soderberg) on our first trip to the ranch. We learned then that she had been a member of the Edmonton Grads.

    Other Events and Attributes:

    • SW Group: 4

    Notes:

    Note:
As per GW in Feb 16/09 email: Tom and Etta's son Joe lived in Edmonton with his wife Faith, and became, I believe, a fire captain or chief. We met his family during our visit in 1973 and travelled to Prince Rupert with them and their son named Joe and his family, which included a son named Joey and two (or three) daughters. To avoid confusion the family referred to the Joes as Big Joe, Little Joe and Joey. My father's name was also Joe which didn't help matters during the trip. Little Joe had Polio as a child and walked with a slight limp as a result. Joe and Faith also had a daughter, I believe named Etta. However, I am not 100% certain of this.

Sadly, Little Joe and Joey died around 1975 while boating.
I believe I heard at the time that Little Joe was 33 in 1975, putting his birth year at 1942. Joey was between my age and my brother's age, putting his year of birth around 1960.

Joseph married Faith Alberta HEBDEN in 1934. Faith was born in 1914; died in 2002. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]
