    Note
    • Lily was living at 258 Washington Street, Girlington (North Riding, Yorkshire) when she married.

She worked at Lister's Mill, in Bradford, as a velvet weaver. There were different kinds of jobs:
spinners were the lowest of the low, then weavers of (cotton?) and then silk and finally the best
weavers were the velvet weavers, which was what Lily did.

She was a 'part-timer', she worked at the mill from 6am until lunchtime, and then went to
school in the afternoon. So she seems to have been quite bright and Granny (Muriel Mallett)
remembers her as an avid reader of the newspapers.

Lister's father, Ellis, was a wealthy and well respected mill owner in Bradford, building and owning 4 mills in the town, the first built in 1815 and the last, Manningham Old Mill, in 1838. He had two sons, John, who gave up the family business and Samuel (born 1815), who gave up manufacturing to concentrate on machinery.
After spending ome time in America selling shawls, Samuel's first major business gamble was to buy the Donisthorpe combing machine which proceeded to successfully develop, manuafacture and sell at a huge profit. He turned over the whole of the Manningham Mill to woolcombing and was, as a result, a very rich man by 1855 at the age of 40.

He then turned his attention to silk, developed a silk comb and with it a silk combing business which, again, was so profitable that he was able to rebuild the old Mill at Manningham when it burned down, and to develop a velvet comb. The rebuilt Manningham Mill was larger and more magnificent that the old one and still stands today as one of Bradford's most famous landmarks.

There is, however, another piece of history attaching to Lister and his Manningham Mill. In the 1890's he enforced a wage cut at the mill as a result of a slump in trade. Nearly 4,000 employees went on strike for 5 months in protest. The strike culminated in 3 nights of rioting before order was restored and the strikers returned, beaten, to work on Lister's terms.

However, the Bradford & District Labour Union was formed soon after the strike was ended and as a direct result of it. This, in turn, paved the way for the formation of the Independent Labour Party which held its inaugral meeting in Bradford in January 1893. Amongst those present were George Bernard Shaw, Keir Hardie - the first Socialist MP - and Fred Jowett who became a minister in the 1924 Labour Government. The modern day Labour Party has its roots in the I.L.P. and, as a consequence, owes much to Sam Lister and the workers at Manningham Mill in the 1890's.
    Note
    • He was a Sunday school superintendent, she was a Sunday school teacher. Family rumour has it that he had been jilted and he married Lily on the rebound. He was 28 and she was 21. The family considered that he had married 'beneath' him and cut him off. Since then all contact with the Mallett family ceased.

The Sunday school presented them with a silver teapot for their wedding. (my granny still has this - KS 19/6/00)

Witnesses: C.A. Mallett and Eva Craven
    Note
    • Walter was a Sunday School superintendant. Lily was a Sunday School teacher. Family rumour has it that Walter married Lily on the rebound from being jilted. He was 28, she was 21. The family considered that he had married beneath himself and they cut him off. Since then all contact with the Mallett family ceased.
The Sunday School presented the happy couple with a silver teapot for their wedding. Muriel still has this.

Witnesses to the marriage were C.A. Mallett and Eva Craven.
