  • Name Edwin Thomas MALLETT  [1
Born Abt Mar 1888  Downham, Norfolk, England Find all individuals with events at this location  [1
    • In both the 1901 and 1911 censuses Edwin was living with his grandparents Thomas and Elizabeth. The 1911 census states that Thomas and Elizabeth had 2 children, and that both were living. These 2 children were David and Walter. In 1901, David was living with his parents along with Edwin. David was single, so not likely the father of Edwin.

By default then, Edwin's father must have been Walter. This is supported by the facts that Walter and Sarah married in the December quarter of 1887, and that Edwin was born in the March quarter of 1888. Both events were registered in Downham. The 1911 census states that Walter and Sarah had 5 children, all living, but in both the 1901 and 1911 census there were only 4 children living with them, leaving room for Edwin as the 5th child.

Obviously, Sarah had a bun in the oven when she and Walter married. They were very young, only 18, and maybe felt that they couldn't support Edwin at that time, so he went to live with his grandparents. Perhaps, by the time they could have taken him home, he was settled in with his grandparents, and they decided to leave him there. Walter and Sarah's next child was not born until 4 years later.

    • It's not clear why they would have been married in Southwark, given that they were both from Norfolk and continued to live there afterward, but the names and dates fit. According to the 1911 census they had been married for 2 years.
